Going Beyond Academics

Teaching has never been merely a career for me; it has always held a profound significance. Teaching is about sharing and caring, and, most importantly, it is a delightful process of continuous learning. My experiences as both a student and a facilitator have shaped my approach to imparting knowledge. I view teaching as an opportunity to inspire and create a meaningful impact on children.

My teachers have exemplified what an ideal educator should be, and I have learnt greatly from them. However, there were a few teachers, such as my primary school mathematics teacher, who illustrated what a teacher should not be. In contrast, my language and social science teachers played a pivotal role in shaping my own teaching philosophy.

My unwavering commitment is to cultivate an inquisitive spirit among children and instil an insatiable thirst for knowledge. I aspire to be a guiding light for my students. My own educational journey was filled with intricate challenges, but my dedication to education helped me persevere through tough times.

One of the most rewarding moments for me as a teacher is witnessing my students’ joyful smiles when their curiosity is satisfied, and I become a source of inspiration for them. This feeling of being a support for my students motivates me to thrive in the teaching profession. I fondly remember my Botany department head, Dr. Vijay Kumar, whose aesthetic appreciation for literature amazed me despite being a science teacher. My passion for history and effective teaching techniques were inspired by teachers like A. M. Shinas and Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi. Their deep subject knowledge, patience, and commitment to nurturing a genuine interest in their subjects were truly exemplary. The ongoing support and guidance from my former teachers, even after I became an experienced social studies teacher, continue to serve as a beacon of light for me.

As a student learning the art of teaching, I realised the importance of self-dependence and seeking help from appropriate channels. This insight has been invaluable in planning both academic and co-curricular activities. I strive to ignite my students’ hidden potential and encourage their creative and critical thinking.

For me, teaching should extend beyond academic improvement; it should foster empathy, emotional resilience, and a sense of moral responsibility, equipping students to contribute positively to society. The challenges faced by modern educators are manifold, especially compared to those of a few decades ago. Today’s children are tech-savvy but often lack social commitment. As a teacher, I aspire to change this trend through thoughtful instruction. While the task is daunting, I believe that with determination, I can find a way.

Teaching comes with great responsibility and a commitment to society, for we shape the future citizens of our classrooms. Teaching and learning are constantly evolving processes, and we must keep the light of enlightenment glowing.
